Aricia artaxerxes ssp. artaxerxes

Post by IAC »

Hi all,
It is always a pleasure to find the first of the Northern Brown Argus on the Berwickshire coastline. Today was cold as it has been all May, and windy..as it has been all May. What are the chances of finding them so early considering the weather we have endured. Well, all calculations out of the window. The Northern Brown Argus arrives precisely when it means to.

Superb!

I'm amazed by the timing though, given the appallingly cold conditions that have prevailed for much of the year.

This is one butterfly I simply must see.

How long is their flight period?

David,
June, July. They can still be around into August and on extremely late sites into September though that is quite exceptional. June is the best time for fresh adult males and July for females, after that it is a bit of a pick n mix. You some times get lucky finding some fresh ones from time to time.
There are some stunning sites to see this Butterfly on the south east coast of Scotland and a bag load of equally incredible sites inland. Travelling from South Wales though you would be better perhaps looking at sites in south west Scotland..unfortunately I know little of these sites.
You have contacted me before about this butterfly and where to see it..if you ever need some further information I would be delighted to help...anytime.

Ah ... the spirit of UKBers ... does my heart good :) Hope to see you soon Iain; having missed you on at least 3 occasions now, I'll make a point of finding you in the next few weeks and will take a photo to prove it :)
