Lulworth Skipper sites

Post by htcdude »

Hi all,

I'll be staying not far from Lulworth in Chaldon Herring as of this Saturday for one week. Are there any particular sites where I might see Lulworth Skipper? I appreciate it may be a little early but it's due to warm up a bit next week so I'm hopeful!

Also can anyone recommend any sites near there for Duke of Burgundy?

Many thanks,

Nige

Hi Nige,

Good sites for the Lulworth Skipper, that I usually visit, include:
- Durlston Country Park http://www.durlston.co.uk/
- Around Lulworth Cove, particuarly Bindon Hill if possible.

In regards to your query about the Duke of Burgundy, Giant Hill in Cerne Abbas is very good at the moment for Dukes, they have recently widened their colony across the entire bottom of the hill. You should also see some Marsh Fritillaries.

All the best and good luck with the Lulworth Skippers, the earliest I have seen them is 3rd June but I know they have been recorded in some years, as early as the beginning of May!

Best wishes,
Andrew.

Hi Andrew,

Really appreciate your reply :-)

I think we're planning a trip to Durlston so will definitely keep an eye out there.

The Lulworth is the one I would most like to see, as far as I know there are a couple of sites fairly local to me in Swindon for Dukes so if I don't get them down there I'm sure I'll connect with them here eventually!

Marsh Frits are nice to see, had a whole bunch of them last week not far from me.

Again thanks for the links and help :-)

If you go to Durleston, go into the Visitor Centre - they do a transect from there and will be able to tell you if Skips have been seen, and where.

First Lulworth Skipper was seen today by Lulworth Rangers so you're in luck!
