Forum Upgrade

Post by Pete Eeles »

Hi all,

Sometime in the next few days I'll be upgrading the forum to the latest version. All posts will be retained. The initial upgrade will not include the blogs - I'll work on this once the essential postings are done.

The new forum has many new features - mostly to do with security. Although there's a nice mechanism for attaching files and images, making it unnecessary to use a 3rd party when posting images.

So - should you find the board disabled, that's why :)

Cheers,

- Pete

Another thought. If you're not sure how to post images or whatever, then please use the Test forum to try things out. I've just posted my first image and I think the mechanism is a lot better than the previous one! And ... all the images are hosted at UK Butterflies!

I like the new forum upgrade. Very nice. I would still prefer if the uername of the person who posted something be on the left side rather than the right side, but other than that, its pretty good.

Hi Dave,

If you want the "old look" then you can get this by going to your "User Control Panel", selecting "Board Preferences" and then selecting "subsilver2". Apols - should have said :)

Looking good Pete.

I'm not totally au fait with 'emoticons'. Under what circumstances does one use Mr Green  ?

I wouldn't want to be misinterpreted!!

Felix.

Surely you use Mr Green when you realise that everyone else has a good camera, and you only have a Sony?

Pete, Just like to thank you for all your hard work. I've been trying for a few years to photograph all the British species and now only have one to go and it's pretty much all down to your website and the people using it. Yours and their assistance has been invaluable and sorry that I'm pretty much a lurker but please be asured that even us quiet ones also appreciate the time and effort you spend on this superb site.

Thanks Dave - and everyone else! I'm intrigued - which species have you yet to see?

Cheers,

Mountain Ringlet - went twice last year in early July. The first time it actually snowed and the second time it was 7 degrees with driving rain :D Oh well I'll certainly try again this year. Everything else has been pretty straightforward and I can't really remember anything I didn't photograph on my first attempt, just been really lucky I suppose. Just checked my notes and the ones I've had real trouble with have been Brimstone and Purple Hairstreak and EEEK I forgot I still nred to photograph Essex Skipper. Only seen them once at a time when I'd forgotten my camera.

Hi Paul - no, you're not missing anything - the blogs aren't currently available. They will be migrated soon, but will take me a little while to sort out.

   Hang on, Eccles has a Sony and I just voted for him, and he's in the lead, if he wins, us Canon and Nikon users could be in for some flack.

Hi Paul - and everyone else with a blog. My intention was to add blog functionality this weekend, only to find out that the latest release of the blog implementation has a dependency on a later version of technology (PHP, specifically) than my ISP provides. I'm in contact with them to find out when they'll be upgrading and will let you know. In the meantime I can only apologise.

Normal service will be resumed ASAP

Cheers,

Another update. My ISP has given me instructions for using the latest versions of underlying technologies and all is now well on that front. The blog upgrade isn't quite production-ready, and we have several options. I'd appreciate feedback on these, especially from those of you with blogs!

1. Wait until the upgrade is ready (unfortunately, I don't have a date for this).

2. Implement the latest (alpha, which is a pre-release) version, on the understanding that any blogs may lose their data (this is a restriction of the alpha release).

3. Implement the latest version and migrate data from the old blogs. Unfortunately, the upgrade of data from the current blog system seems to only "half" work (which I'm in the process of fixing!). Again, any data cannot be guaranteed once the release version is ready.

So - apologies for not having sorted this before migrating the forum. But any feedback and thoughts would be appreciated. Due to several security risks that have been addressed in the new forum, I really did need to upgrade :)

Cheers,

- Pete

Hi Pete,

Thanks for your efforts... always appreciated. I've nothing personally I want to save from my blog, indeed starting again has some advantages!! ( option 2 sounds OK) Can't speak for others though!
