I still want a fat-fit option with big pockets where I can stuff wads of £50 notes.

Exactly, which is why I think you need to keep the logo which we all know and love for consistency which is the heading of the website with the writing and the caterpillar.

We are completely in agreement, you just don't realise yet

Actually, the logo includes the Purple Emperor too. In fact, it's pretty fundamental to the logo, since it's a butterfly :)

So let's go back to basics. Assuming there is some text and an image, if the text is "UK Butterflies" then what is an appropriate image? I think having a butterfly is better than a caterpillar.

Hi Pete/Susie/all,

Preferably both images, but I do think it will be necessary to reduce the relative size of the PE adult (closer to the vertical dimension dictated by text and caterpillar), otherwise the badge will end up being quite clunky and heavy, particularly as the adult image as it stands will require a border, top and bottom.

I think the same should be adopted for any clothing, as just the PE image alone is not unique enough, and although it might be recognisable to members, fails to advertise the site to a wider audience.

Just a thought but how would it look if the PE adult was moved over so it covers the middle of the text, masking the 'tte' perhaps, would it still work? Might balance out the badge better? Do you think the word Butterflies would still be recognisable?

Would need to be careful though, wouldn't mask the 'er' bit

Okay - I've put everything on hold (clothing, badges) for now - given that we don't agree on what's needed.

Sounds like we need to start this exercise by coming up with a UKB logo that will be suitable for the website, badges and clothing. I personally believe that a butterfly needs to be a part of the logo (which is why it was being elevated to a prominent position - seems like others feel the text is the main item).

We also need to bear in mind that, for clothing (and possibly any badge), the graphics need to be very very simple. I think the caterpillar is too complex for clothing (and possibly the badge).

All proposals welcome!

Cheers,

- Pete

Given that the Purple Emperor is pretty much the most iconic British species, is it somehow possible to create an image of this butterfly with 'UKB' as a logo by way of recognisable acronym?

If it is going to cause difficulties perhaps it is best to leave the badge idea for now and concentrate on the clothing. Probably easier for everyone.

The idea can be revisited in the future depending on how the clothing goes.

With the best will in the world you can never please everyone. The best thing to do is after everyones had their 2 pennies worth a core group of peeps (no more than 5) discuss and settle on a design which can then be unveiled to the forum when its done.

We don't need a core group, the decision is Pete's. :)

How about launching a competition for a logo + text which would be suitable both for clothing and for a badge ?

Just a thought...........

No one has suggested an embroidered patch yet. Could this be a versatile option (as well as a badge)?

I did Vince, I even left a space on my camera bag for one :D However I think we need to settle on the logo first. My suggestion would be to have a square logo with the Purple Emperor on one side with UKB on the other vertically. Just my two pennies worth...

Have a goodun

Hi Pete,

Of course taste is a very personal thing and it's impossible to please everybody but I thought I'd knock up a design that I personally wouldn't mind wearing.

I am sure that you are all aware of the existence of

Obviously to avoid confusion you don't want the UKB design to be too close to that.
I imagine that embroidering a PE in detail at a smallish size might not be the easiest.
