One for the Moth-ers...

Post by Tony Moore »

Happened on this stunner in Hoi An, Vietnam, last week, whilst out looking for butts. It was still drying its wings and has to be the biggest Hawkmoth I've ever seen. Anybody know what it is?

I'll post some of the butterflies seen when I've had a sort through.

Wow! that's a cracker Tony.

Possibly a Mango Hawkmoth - Amplypterus panopus?

I'm sure you're right, Trev. It's a female - larger and more magnificent than the male. Nothing else in d'Abrera's Sphingidae Mundi matches it.

Wow. That is an amazing moth which I've never seen before.

Even using 'google' it's hard to find much information on Mango Hawk Moth.

Excellent sighting.
