Good site for Brown Hairsteak?

Post by DavidS »

Can anybody recommend some good sites for Brown Hairstreak at this time of year. I will be travelling, hopefully next weekend, from the Northwest, so sites in the Oxfordshire or Gloucester areas would preferred to more southerly sites.

Thanks in anticipation

I believe Bernwood Forest can be productive as can Whitecross Green Wood.

Alner's Gorse in Dorset is the best place that I have been to. They are frequent and usually low down. It's also good for late Purple Hairstreak....

At least 7 female BrH and a scruffy PH at Whitecross Green Wood on friday. I travelled from NW too - to IOW!

Anymore acronyms anyone?

Thanks all for your suggestions. Any further details for the preferred areas in Bernwood or Whitecross would be appreciated and if you make sure it is sunny on Sunday that would be even better.

Thanks

Hi David, another good site is Grafton Wood, Worcestershire, it might be a little nearer, junction 6, off M5.

See Grafton Wood report, on Sightings page 2. for details.

Plenty of other b/f's too.

Hopefully some of the female Brown Hairstreaks will still be in a fresh condition. I believe it is going to be a fine but quite cool weekend. I tried the Oxon/Bucks sites this year, but had my only photo opportunities at Shipton Bellinger. On different visits I found a few of both sexes low down along the Wilts/Hants boundary hedge. Although now, any surviving males will appear very worn.
