What has happened to this Grayling?

Surely this cannot be the tattered remains of too much egg-laying? The butterfly seemed healthy and flew normally. It looks like something disast(er/him). :mrgreen:

I don't know but I would be interested to find out what it is. I had a male blue butterfly (can't remember if it was Adonis or chalk hill) that had the same sort of thing a year or so ago.

Difficult to imagine how anything could have removed the last bit of the abdomen without any wing destruction...
