Butterfly Shrub ID Please

Post by John_C »

Can anyone ID this shrub which proved to be a butterfly magnet yesterday please, it measures approx 7ft by 7ft in size and it was covered in butterflies (25-40 butterflies of 7 different species with about 2/3 of these being Green-veined Whites for the entire hour or so I was there), I have several plants in my garden especially various Sedum, Valerian and Verbena which attract quite a lot of butterflies but I have only ever seen this many butterflies on my Buddleja "White Profusion", many thanks.

Hi John,

Looks like a white lilac variety (Syringa sp.) to me.

Hope that helps.

Kind regards. Mark

Thanks very much mark, I have just been searching Syringa shrubs on the internet and I see that there are now literally hundreds or even thousands of different species / cultivars available, I may well plant one of these in my own garden later this year in any case.

Looking at the leaves I would agree it's probably a variety of lilac.
