Does anyone know if the fritillaries, as a group, are distasteful to predators? They seem to rarely suffer wing damage, except from brambles and the like, and the small ones do flutter around in a 'please eat me' kind of way.
Any ideas?

Good question.
The larger Frits fly very powerfully but as you say, our smaller ones tend to flutter rather pathetically just asking to be devoured.
I've never read that they're distasteful/poisonous.
