New! Video Gallery

Post by Pete Eeles »

Hi all,

Just to let you know that I've added a rudimentary facility to add videos to UKB. This has been a long time coming (I've been waiting for someone else to build it!) and, at last, it's here. I believe that we'll be seeing much more video footage appearing in future, so there is an element of keeping up with the times! So - if you want to see what it looks like, you can click on the Videos link at the top of each forum page, which will take you here:

video.php

A summary of videos can be also found here:

http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/species_videos.php

The video gallery is integrated into the species pages (and home page) just like the photo gallery. At the moment, it only contains videos by myself. Some elements are a bit clunky (e.g. when adding a video, if you don't select the correct category, then you need to delete the record and add a new one). So how does it work? Well, this is simply an interface onto YouTube - you don't upload any videos, you just link to them. In other words, put your videos onto YouTube, and then add the link to UKB.

Since you can add any YouTube videos (by you or anyone else), could I please ask you to restrict additions to items that will fill gaps (e.g. new behaviour, new entry for a given species) other we'll just end up with a lot of clutter. And, as moderators, the team will be pruning where necessary :)

I've been corresponding with the chap who's written this addition, and have asked for some enhancements, not least one that will allow be to show the copyright to the original author of the video.

As ever, please let me know of any issues / bugs.

Cheers,

- Pete

I'm having a lot of fun looking at YouTube for good vids - here's a nice one on the Maculinea!

Useful addition to an already excellent site.

Here's another you tube video which might be of interest:

Hi David - if you think any video is worthy of inclusion, just add it yourself as you would a photo in the species-specific photo albums. Personally, I probably would't add this since it's a) poorly photographed and b) feels like the critter is being "chased"! Your choice.

Cheers,

I only put the link here because it's the only time I've ever seen Red Admirals in cop - it certainly wouldn't win any awards for artistic impression!

I was happy to see the Red Admiral footage as I also have not seen them mating before but pehaps this kind of footage could be removed if better footage of the same behaviour is added?
I realise that some of my video footage could easily be superseded by others or edited and reposted by me. When ones ego is involved it can be a little hard to be objective :)
I have just added my White Admiral video, mainly of territorial perching behaviour & have included some "moving still pictures" to "spice it up a bit".
Best Wishes
Kind Regards,
