Gibraltar Swallowtail type?

Post by EricY »

On a recent cruise round Iberia I was granted 20 minutes to dash round Alameda garden Gibraltar while my wife sat on a seat by entrance! Saw several butterflies ic Monarch & some whites & managed this poor distant shot high up in a tree, any id please?

That's a two-tailed pasha, Charaxes jasius - the only European member of a very large African genus. Although it has tails it is actually unrelated to the swallowtails, being closer to aristocrats like the purple emperor.

Nice shot, by the way, given she was high up in a tree!

Many thanks Guy, I knew you would come up trumps

David, thanks for commenting, I would have loved to spend more time there as the garden had quite a few butterflies. I did rather better @ Cadiz as wife could not walk ashore there & hope to post a few more photos when I have sorted them out
