Post by andy_j »

Just learning this so please be gentle with me.

Is this a large white as i thought LW's had a spot on each wing rather than a band.

This is what i thought to be a large white...or is it just sexual differences

The top butterfly is a male Large White. These lack the upper forewing spots seen on the female.

Your Meadow Brown looks male to me and your Small Tortoiseshell is just that!

Don't be embarrassed, Andy. I still make a fool of myself sometimes when it comes to identification.

As Guy Padfield pointed out the other week, 'learner' is the only category that exists!
