Swallowtail in E. Sussex.

Post by andy_j »

Im not huge on butterflies but im trying to learn more. However i was sitting in a churchyard fairly close to Eastbourne yesterday and this little beauty fluttered in. ironically, i'd only just bought a decent DSLR camera the day before but i didn't take it with me. So managed to get this rather blurry shot on my £20 phone !!!.

Had to join the forum to share it with you, i have used this site for identification many times.

Andy

You've certainly started with a belter of a butterfly Andy - Welcome to the site! :D
Now you've dipped your toe and got hooked by our native butterflies, I'm sure your interest will increase. Just about everything you could wish to find out about our native butterflies can be found via this site and, as you will discover, you couldn't meet a friendlier bunch of people. Enjoy your new camera and keep on snapping.

Thank you. Didn't quite realise the signifigance of the sighting. Ive now reported it to the Sussex branch of the butterfly conservation society.

That aside, the place was also full of large whites, meadow browns, peacocks, red admirals and a few other non identified species....along with quite a few emperor dragonflies !!!!!

What a lovely surprise. It's one thing to travel around and search out our lovely butterflies, quite another to happen across one like this Andy

More warm weather on its way next week :D

Could the southern coastal areas become inundated with these visitors?

I was unfortunately unable to get out yesterday evening to see the Swallowtail following a call from Michael Blencowe. However, with the weather being so wet I decided it was worth a go to today as it was still likely to be in the same spot with the poor weather. I'm very glad I did attempt it as the butterfly was still there and as the weather improved slowly it also opened its wings. My thanks to Michael for letting me know about it and for David Bradford for the original find.

Nice reward, Bob, and so clearly gorganus in your excellent open wing shot.
