A small fungal section?

Pete, From time to time interesting fungi are posted and the threads are always very instructive,like this recent one.I note that it is included in the section for Butterfly Identification.It would be very nice to have a section of fungal identification for UKbutterfliers,especially as it fits into the close season for butterflies,they are nice to photograph and that we have such an expert in our midst-namely Guy.What do you think?

I'm not convinced this is a good idea.

There are plenty of websites and forums dedicated to fungi and would suggest that that such topics are best discussed in such areas. UKB is after all UK 'Butterflies' ...

Hi PJ - the website could be "stretched" in so many ways ... to European butterflies, to moths, to other insect orders, to other orders (birds, bees, dragonflies), etc. etc.

Each time such a thought has been aired, the consensus has always been to keep the website focused on the butterflies of the British Isles!

The Wild About Britain forums are a good place to air all these sorts of topic: fungi, orchids, lichens, etc.,etc. see: http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/forums/

While it's good top see people's varied interests in their personal diaries, I'm not sure that the site as a whole wants to stray too far from its main aim.

I too think we should only have labelled forum sections for butterflies or we could finish up diluting the point of the website. I posted the recent mushroom ID question as it just seemed so unusual and although the odd wildlife-related asides are healthy for us butterfly nuts, we wouldn't want to dedicate any specific sections for it (apart from, as Mike suggests, any blogs)

I think it works well as it is. The UK Butterflies focus defines the community. Obviously, within the community there is a wide range of expertise in many subjects and groups of organisms and it is brilliant that everyone is ready to share this - but it would change things if this were done formally, by having forum sections, rather than informally. Maybe a links page to other recommended forums would be useful - and sites we link to might reciprocate by linking back to us.

On the mushrooms front, the real expert is Zonda, who doesn't post a lot now. His lifelong passion for fungi puts my cheapskate, 'can I eat it?' mycology quite in the shade!
