Small Copper?

Post by ChrissyM »

In May I once again went to the island of Skiathos. Interestingly just like the UK many of the plants were up to two weeks later than normal which, gave me some new butterflies to add to my growing list, the Long Tailed Blue being one of them :)
On a meadow of wild flowers I came across several small coppers, this one being an example:

However, I also saw this one, sadly I don't have an underside image:

I know that there are so many variations so my question is, is this simply a very dark Small Copper or is it something different?

I think that it's a Small Copper of the summer brood - at least it looks like one posted by Essexbuzzard recently. Hope this helps, cracking shots by the way :D

Have a goodun

Thanks Wurzel :) I am thinking it must just be an oddity...too early for a summer brood and it did stand out as being different. Next time (if there is one), I will just have to chase it around and get the underneath too! I have many Greek mysteries....I shall just have to go back

"Dark" Small Coppers are quite normal on the continent. Here's one from Bulgaria:

Thank you very much Pete and Vince... :)
Another step forward to my learning. When it is quieter I will post a list and some pics of my Greek experiences but, one for the winter .....when we need a little sunshine on darker nights.

In P.J.'s picture, the one on the right is a sooty copper and the other is a small copper.

The one on the left is Small Copper, the one on the right a male Sooty.

Nice shot!
