Struggling to ID this one....

Post by k8d »

The shape of the wings has got me stumped, been searching online all morning, and I'm now wondering if its more moth like due to the body shape? Pic was taken inside a polytunnel (where we don't tend to get moths) hence the greyness to the photo as it reflects light, but it was more of a grey/silver rather than white. Taken in Berks, South East Eng, in daytime, farmland/ meadow/woodland area. Any help much appreciated!

Thanks, Kate.

Hi Kate. This is a common emerald moth. See:

I'm glad you found the answer to your question and hope you will come back with more photos :) I remember being very puzzled once by a Speckled Yellow moth, enjoying the sunshine as much as any butterfly. In those days, there weren't any helpful websites to turn to, and it took me ages to sort it out. As Padfield said, we're all continually learning.
