To enter the competition, please post a single image taken in 2013 before 1st June (1 post per member) as follows:

- Click on the "Gallery" link and then open the "Spring 2013" album (gallery/album.php?album_id=2261)
- Click the "NEW IMAGE" button
- Follow the instructions to upload a single image

To view the entries:

- Click on the "Gallery" link and then open the "Spring 2013" album (gallery/album.php?album_id=2261)

To edit or delete your entry, which you can do until 5th June:

- Select the "Moderate" link at the bottom of the image details
- Take the appropriate action

Please note that the entries are not anonymous when posted (they will be visible to all visitors), and that the judging will be conducted by a panel.

Yes - given the strange season - last entries by 5th July. We'll then run the spring comp until the end of September (rather than August).

Any members wanting to change their entry can, of course, do so.

Hi all,

Another very close competition - the standard just keeps getting better and better! Thanks to Gary and Lisa for assisting with the judging and I'll tell you right now that there wasn't universal agreement with almost all images ranking in someone's top 5. However, we have converged on the following top 3 and congrats to all of the winners:

1st Nigel Kiteley - Heath Fritillary
2nd mud-puddling - Silver-studded Blue
=3rd FISHiEE - Marsh Fritillary
=3rd Rosalyn - Wood White

One of my personal favourites didn't make the top 4 - Tony Moore's superb photo of a Speckled Wood egg. I guess that's why the annual competition has different categories, because it seemed like we were comparing Beethoven with the Beatles!

Thank you very much to the judges for choosing my Heath Fritillary image as the winning entry. The image was taken on a mountain track in Southern France during a four day trip last month.

Congratulations to the other three placed entries, of which FISHEE's Marsh Fritillary was my favourite, i've never seen such a well marked individual.

i'd like to mention badgerbobs Wall brown. not a butterfly I have much experience with personally but just from reading this forum and on that reputation alone I gather these are tricky little beggars to photograph. and because of that I did a google image search on wall brown, and even looked in the UKB gallery and on flickr and there are very few pictures of that quality of this butterfly in the sun like this one. I don't know if it's cropped image or not but it did make me wonder if difficulty of the subject is taken into account as well as all the technical aspects. eg, surely it's easier to get a technically better shot of a roosting butterfly than it is a butterfly in sun.

Anyway, well done all participants, you're all braver than me for putting in entries

Not the biggest turnout but all cracking images!

Took me a while to find the mud puddling silver studded blue. Was sure I hadn't seen one of those in the entries lol!

Think my favourite of the bunch was Ben Kitely's Scarce Swallowtail. I've never managed to find one in such perfect condition, let alone one that would sit still low down any length of time!

My Marsh Fritillary had emerged that morning I think. Hadn't seen a single one for the first 4-5 days of the trip when normally they should have been out weeks before and probably a bit past their best by then!
