Lovely! We were in Norfolk last weekend and saw quite a few Emperor dragonflies - Their bodies truly were sky blue and what with their green heads, they really are spectacular creatures.

I also came across a nymph hatching out at the edge of a small pond (not an Emperor, but a Darter of some kind I presume?):

judging by the size ( width ) of the body I`d say either 4-spotted or Broad bodied Chaser. (Libellula quadrimaculata or Libellula depressa ).

I went back a couple of hours later and this is what it had transformed into:

It was very pale straw yellow but that may have changed later (?) I'm not very good with dragonflies (I know they change even as adults). Does that help?

It looks completely different now ! Body much slimmer and longer ( wish I could do that ! ). I`ll now say a newly emerged Common Darter female (Sympetrum striolatum ) but I`m happy to be corrected by those more knowledgeable.

Like you, I was expecting something with a thick body (secretly hoping for a broad-bodied chaser ), but the wings are obviously not the only things which get elongated once it has hatched out.
