best book

Hi all iam new on here and to the whole butterflie thing what is the best book out there to get ????? have to say this is a spot on site lads..

Hi Wayne - and welcome.

The most comprehensive book is, by far, "The Butterflies of Britain and Ireland" by Jeremy Thomas and Richard Lewington: http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/reports_ ... ington.php

For a field guide, the "Britain's Butterflies" is very good and includes all life stages: http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/reports_newland.php

And for moths, "Field Guide to the Moths of Great Britain and Ireland" by Waring, Townsend and Lewington which isn't (IMHO) a field guide! For that you need:

"Concise Guide to the Moths of Great Britain and Ireland" by the same authors.

Of course, there are many other books too, but these are a good starter set. See http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/books.php (which is out of date!).

I love Thomas and Lewington - ideal for reading at home on long winter evenings dreaming of hot June days

For a field guide I like Lewington's Pocket Guide to the Butterflies of Great Britain and Ireland.

Depending on whether you want something portable or something more sturdy for the home, I can recommend two.
Portable: if you have an iphone there is a superb Butterfly app, with photos and all the other possible info you could wish for.

For an inspiring read, though not a guide book, try Patrick Barkham's 'The Butterfly Isles'. It is the story of a year's search to see all 59 British butterfly species, with loads of information and anecdotes about people and places. A beautifully written book.
