North Meadow Cricklade

Post by MikeOxon »

Following a recent posting on this site, I visited North Meadow at Cricklade myself yesterday. It has a really spectacular display of Snake's-Head Fritillaries (plants not butterflies!) at present, which is well worth seeing if in the area. A word of warning however! The main entrance is currently flooded and only accessible in waders (or bathing costume). There is, however, an alternative way in via a muddy but passable track from West Mill Lane, to the South of the meadow. This can be reached from the B4040 towards Malmesbury.

There were plenty of Skylarks singing overhead but I didn't see any butterflies in the meadow itself, although Orange Tip, Comma and Peacock were in the lane nearby.

Indeed you did - and very enjoyable! I'm glad you came back to me as I couldn't find your original post when I looked - there's been so much on the site (mainly about the weather!) recently.
