Hairy Brown Caterpillar

Post by SammyJ »

Can anyone identify this caterpillar? Found in a garden. Not by any particular food plant.

This is a link to Ispot as I don't think it has uploaded by image.

I'd go with the caterpillar of the Buff Ermine as already guessed / commented on the photo-page.

It certainly looks like the caterpillar of the moth Buff Ermine to me. The larval foodplants are a wide range of herbaceous plants, honeysuckle, hop, common nettle, barberry and birches. It is found in gardens amongst other habitats. I hope that helps Sammy.

Thanks Nick and Michael. That helps a lot. I am new to butterflies and moths and starting out with butterflies really to ease myself in.
