small skipper

Post by geniculata »

Found an unusually dark marked small skipper yesterday, one which ive not seen as dark before.
Has anyone any referance to this as being within normal variation as ive looked in a the species file and found nothing to match.

Gary.

Hi Gary. The books don't usually mention it, but yes, this is normal variation. Particularly later in the flight period, and particularly in the female, this species regularly shows these broad, dark borders and overall dark appearance.
