Whites - identification when flying?

Post by JohnR »

Has anyone any tips on identifying Whites on the wing? Round here there are about ten times the number of Whites than there were last year when I could stalk individuals until they settled. In flight I really can't tell them apart and I can't go leaping through the crops when they do land.

It's hard to tell Green Veined and Small Whites apart unless they fly right next to you.

Generally, I find Small Whites are a bit more free-roaming and purposeful in flight, whereas GVWs are more dithery and spend more time pottering about greenery rather than flowering plants.
