id please

Post by dillon »

hi to every 1 ,im new to the site and would like id on a butterfly ( i think it was or a moth ). Unfortunately i wasnt quick enough with the camera so i can only describe it as best i can. It was around 7 o`clockish and it was flying in and out of my lavender plants it was medium in size and its top halve was a greyish colour and its tail had a fleckled pattern on it with a touch of orange. I couldnt see what colour its wings were as they were beating to fast ( not like a normal butterfly would ) It also didnt land to feed on the flower (like a butterfly would ) but it had a very long probosis and hovered on each flower probing away. I hope you can help as me and my son have never seen anything like it before.......Many thanks
