Wall Brown?

Post by Martin »

Is this a Wall Brown? The spots match the photo in my ID book, as does the description of habit etc. However, the main orange/brown marbled areas are quite different. My book shows a female, so I'm thinking this might be a male. Either that or it's a sub-spiecies as I live in Spain.

Hi Martin,

This is actually a Speckled Wood (Pararge aegeria), although it is the subspecies aegeria (Pararge aegeria aegeria), which we don't have in the UK. See http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/species. ... led%20Wood for the UK subspecies tircis.

See

http://www.leps.it/indexjs.htm?SpeciesP ... rAeger.htm for the subspecies aegeria (and other subspecies).

I hope the Spanish weather is better than that in the UK at the moment!

Cheers,

- Pete

Thanks, once again.

How's Thatcham? I used to live outside Basingstoke in another life and have very good friends in Burfield Common.

Thatcham's fine :)

It's quite good living near the Wiltshire / Berkshire / Hampshire border for butterflies!

Cheers,

I also was in Spain recently and saw several of these Speckled Woods but only managed an underwing shot. Nice to know what they are, thanks.
