Small Blue and people in the North

Post by Chris »

Can anybody help me locate Small Blue in the North East of England?

PM me if it's a secret!

I'm conscious that conservation and wildlife aren't taken quite as seriously up here... so i don't expect a response. In my local this week, when pressed to share with the regulars the sort of things I photograph, I received the responses: "By 'eck, are thee one uv them poofters, leek?" and "What's a yung ladd leek thee, derrin chasin about burrflies, ye owta be chasin gurrls, ye saft apeth."

I shalln't share with you what my response was (far too vulgar), but i won the argument.

Regards,

Chris

Small Blue - Yorkshire

Post by walshey »

Hi Chris, sounds like your local could be in Barnsley or Rotherham, dont find that sort of talk much in cosmopolitan Leeds!

Anyway, as far as I know there aren't any Small Blues left in Yorkshire. There are alleged sightings sometimes but no proof. Check out http://www.yorkshirebutterflies.org.uk/ ... htings.htm
Although this may not tell you where to go for the endangered species it tells you if they are present.

Cheers,

John

Hi Chris,

I live in Middlesbrough and the nearest Small Blues to us are across in Cumbria. Best site is Workington.

Find Derwent Drive - copy and paste the multimap link below. On
Derwent Drive there is a retail park including a Morrisons, B&Q and Halfords.

Park at the back right hand end of the carpark near Halfords. Take the
small path to the right of Halfords and take the right hand turn
following the path to the road (less than 100 yards). Cross the road
and bear left 30 yards. You will see a small set of steps disappearing
downwards through the bushes. Take the steps down and check the
scrubby areas both right and left.

Please do not cross the railway lines as you will then be on Corus land and you will be watched on CCTV. Access here is sensitive. On the puplic area here you will easily see large numbers without needing to cross the lines.

Hope the above helps
Cheers

Martyn

Thanks both....

I exaggerated the "northernness" for effect... The people speak much nicer round here, but the sentiment was right!

Chris
