walnuts

one thing i keep forgetting to ask the more travelled members. . . over at Martin Down and now at Sovell Down i have found walnut shells. Anyone else noticed them? any know how or why?

Husk on or off, if the shells are perfectly clean and polished perhaps someone has been putting out shop bought nuts for wildlife.

it is certainly a strange one. at Martin down they are scattered all over the place. but thats better than the no theories i have come up with.

Wild ones without the husk still tend to have a bit of a dirty appearance so it shouldnt be too hard to discover if they are wild or shop bought. As I am sure you know walnut trees are not native but have been planted here for many years (hundreds) and I have found trees on sites which had previously been inhabited. I think someone might have been getting rid of a load left over from christmas though.
