Distribution Maps

Hi, I was looking through some of the distribution Maps on the main site and most of them I can't see, it just comes up with the grid letters and the red dots for sites, I folled the help page on this but everything is as it should be, so can anyone say what the problem is?

Hi James,

When you say you can't see "most of them" - can you see any maps? If you could provide 1 or 2 examples of those you can see, and those you can't, it will help narrow things down.

I assume you have applet support enabled - otherwise you wouldn't see anything! But which browser are you using and, if you know, which Java runtime?

Well I went through them and all I can see are Swallowtail, Brimstone, Orange Tip, Peacock, Comma, Wall, Grayling, Gatekeeper and Ringlet all the others just come up with the grid letters and the red dots for sites. I am using Internet Explorer 6.0 and I have Version 6 update 1 of Java if thats what you mean as I'm no good at computers.

Still looking into it. Does anyone else out there have the same problem?

I must admit, I'm a bit stumped, since the maps are rendered using a Java applet with identical code.

I have the same problem.

The p-b frit distribution map, for example, comes up like this for me:

(but bigger, and with the top of Scotland too!)

No amount of reloading &c. corrects it.

Hmmm. OK - let's do this together then! Here's the message I sent to James. Let me know how you get on:

1. What operating system are you using? Windows XP?

2. You say you're using version 6 update 1 of Java. This sounds a bit strange since it's currently at release 1.5. To get the latest version, you can follow the instructions at: http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/applets.php

3. How much memory do you have in your machine? I'm wondering if it's something to do with the number of sites on the map.

4. Are you able to view regional maps? Click on one of the grid squares here: http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/sites.php

5. You could try following the instructions at: http://www.fitwise.com/testjava.asp

My old laptop shows the maps properly and runs Sun Java, version 1.5.

My desktop is brand new, because the old one died a few weeks ago, and runs XP Professional with Sun Java 1.6 (which I downloaded separately, as Microsoft no longer includes Java Virtual Machine with the package). This is the computer that does not show (all) the maps properly. Its specifications are far better than the laptop, so RAM, processor speed &c. are not the issue.

Regional maps show fine (and I hadn't noticed this excellent feature of the website, Pete!!).

Might it be an issue with Java 1.6?

I had a problem with one version of Java, possibly 1.6. I upgraded to Vista and got Java runtime 2 and updates and it works on IE7 on Vista. Not sure what the problem actually is.

As I said I'm no good at computers, but it is version 1.6 I must have gotten confused somewhere.

Not sure if this helps, but the list of species James can see is the list of resident species which do not have a space character in their name (it excludes Map and Monarch, but I assume these have no distribution to be mapped).

Thanks - all good comments. I must admit - I'm really stumped here. A few days ago, having downloaded the latest Java runtime environment, I managed to reproduce the problem (for Clouded Yellow, as it happens). Today, it works.

This seems to be quite a "deep" problem in the sense that it's highly complex and involves (I think) changes to the threading priority made in version 6 (for those that understand concurrency in IT systems!).

Anyway - I'll keep looking.

I tried a few things on the sights and it works. I checked my version and i have standard version 1.6! I don't get this.
