I think its a large skipper but I'm a beginner and usually get it wrong. I would welcome an opinion from an expert

Given the black under the tips of the antennae, I think this might be an Essex Skipper. Large (and Small) skippers don't have this.

Then again, there is quite a lot of variety between individuals and, given the hook on the end of the right antenna, it could well be a Large Skipper!

Hi Pete,

I know Small Skippers don't have the black on the underside of the antennae, but surely Large Skippers can?

I think Dave's photo is a Large Skipper - there is a hint of underwing spotting visible right towards the top of the wing, though the angle of the photo does not help.
