Arnside Knott near Morcambe Bay keeps cropping up in these pages.

Hi James you should get Discover Butterflies in Britain by D.E. Newland it mentions quite a few northern sites.

If you click Links, then Wildlife Trusts, then Lancashire, Manchester and Merseyside, you will get some useful pointers.

One place I can recommend from personal experience is Gait Barrows, which is only a couple of miles from Arnside Knott so you could do both in a day. These sites offer a variety of species and are particularly noted for fritillaries.
