When using PS sharpening, what works for me in most cases is to use a combination of two of the sharpening filters: Smart sharpen with the "amouunt" set at about 25% and the radius set to about 2.5 pixels will give narrow lighter edges around the dark areas and narrow darker edges around the light areas making the detail look sharper.
This can be combined with the "unsharp masking" filter with the "amount" set to about 20% and the "radius" set between 50 to 70 pixels. This has the effect of increasing the contrast between lighter and darker parts of the image which gives the appearence of increased sharpness. These are used singly or in combination to achieve the desired effect.
Of course it depends on the origional image and your preferences
