January 2011 Immature stages

Post by Gruditch »

Please note that, over the winter, various "themes" will be given for the competition. You may choose any photo you have so long as it's relevant to the theme (and is not restricted to photos taken during the month in question)! January theme is, Immature stages.

To enter the competition, please post a single image (1 post per member) as follows:

- Click on the "Gallery" link and then open the "January 2011" album
- Click the "NEWIMAGE" button
- Follow the instructions to upload a single image

To view the entries:

- Click on the "Gallery" link and then open the "January 2011" album

You'll be able to edit or delete your entry until 5th February. To do this:

- Select the "Moderate" link at the bottom of the image details
- Take the appropriate action

You will be unable to rate or comment on the image until the competition has been voted on. Comments and constructive critique are very welcome thereafter.

Look forward to seeing the entries roll in , good luck !

Yes, congratulations to Pete, Vince and Paul...
The Lackey moth caterpillar takes me right back to my youth (yes that far  ), as on my way to school, I used to walk past a line of trees on which every year these caterpillars would appear. They live very gregariously and hundreds would march up and down the trunk like a line of soldiers. The stripy backs were a wonderful "uniform" and those funny little black eye spots always made them look like someone had painted smiley faces on them... Ah, happy days :D

My thanks to the "Lackey Appreciation Society" and all those that voted my photo into second place this month. This was my first experience with this species and I was struck by just how odd and amusing it looked. The eye spots are where the eyes would be.........what's that all about! They should be at the other end in order to mis-direct predators. It's as if it is saying, here is my head and I'm watching you. Maybe it is just relying on it's warning colours to deter attack.

It's a shame that there were so few entries this month, so credit to those that took part, although I completly understand why some people have become dissillusioned with the competition (see "Suggestions please" thread). My top votes this month went to Paul's Titania, Denise's Orange Tip and Pete's Brown Hairstreak which was unique in my experience.

Congratulations to the winners. :)

My top three in order were, Vince's Lackey, Paul's Titania and Millard's Comma, but I also really liked Grumpy's Peacock and Antonym's unknown.
Some great shots there. It's a shame that the winner put in two entries. :(

Congratulations to the winners. Some great shots. The top 3 were my top 3 and Pete's ovipositing Brown Hairstreak was quite an amazing capture, and Paul's Tatania's Fritillary Pupae a stunning subject. I would love to be able to find pupae in the wild as they can be quite stunning, but I rarely do find them. I'm not that much better with caterpillars actually, and can rarely do them justice with the camera even when I do occasionally find them!

I think we can perhaps excuse Pete's two entries this time round as it looks like his first (and quite successful!) attempt at the competitions. Is there no way of enforcing a single upload for the competition galleries? I had assumed that was the case but I guess not.

Unfortunately not - another item for the list of enhancements!

Cheers,
