You're naughty, Jack! I had tried inverting the colours, but it made the white line black and highly improbable.

Speckled wood it could be, but I favour male ringlet. My last try.

Ha ha, nice one Charles...

Not sure about the first pattern, but I did have to smile at the second...
It is an old shot of the venue formerly known as "Over Railway Cutting" (home to one of the few colonies of Grizzled Skippers left in our area)... Now it has been concreted over and is better known as the "Mis-guided Busway". We STILL await the opening of this £160 million white elephant. Good luck with getting all that money back from bus fares if it ever opens.

The third pattern must be a peacock.

How many years to get a return that "investment"? I'm not too sure how much of the bill has fallen on us, the council tax payers.

There's no recent info about possible opening dates. No doubt one day the mayors of Cambridge and Huntingdon will hold an enthusiastic ceremony:"Good for the people of Cambridgshire, good for the environment, blah, blah, blah." I wonder if the mayors have been born yet?

The first one's got me really puzzling, Charles. You weren't lucky enough to get an ups picture of great banded grayling, were you?

Guy

PS - With University Challenge coming up in 45 minutes, it occurs to me this would make a jolly good picture round. Not butterflies, of course, because no one on quiz shows knows anything about natural history - but famous statesmen or buildings, for example, seen through a kaleidoscope.

In the previous set, from Corfu, I'd actually be interested to see the original of the second picture. I can't make up my mind if it's a speckled wood or a wall, but either way it seems to have a very broad dark edge to the forewing. Or maybe it's neither and I'm completely misreading it. The last is scarce swallowtail and the one above that is two-tailed pasha. But the first one, which looks like a swallowtail, is also puzzling me because I can't see how it works. I'm easily puzzled.

Well done Trev... the second pic ( black & white ) was the Over railway site with the disused rails in situ...taken 3 years ago.

The third pic was of a Peacock in February 2009 (my first butterfly of the year)

Guy you are right on the money again !! The top pic was indeed a Brintesia circe upperside:
4845306627_6e814ebb2a_b.jpg
This butterfly was exhausted by a violent storm & took refuge on the balcony of the hostel near Carcassonne. Despite the valiant efforts of several young ladies it passed away during the night.

The Corfu pics were i) Pasha ii) Wall iii) Pasha iv) Scarce Swallowtail ;

here is the Wall:

and the first Pasha ( upperside... which may have mislead you ! ):

Aha!! All becomes clear! That pasha pic included forewing and hindwing and I was trying to interpret it as just showing part of the hindwing! I did consider jasius, but couldn't make it work.

I see the wall properly too, now.

Thanks!
