Ribena
Ribena
unusually now with sky+ i actually watched a TV advert for Ribena Blackcurrant drink (other black currant drinks are available ) and i was wondering how intentional it was to have a Comma in the advert with ribes species being a larval foodplant. too deep for the general public to appreciate maybe but if it was intentional I certainly appreciated it. well done them.

I just thought it was great that the Blackcurrants looked so happy committing suicide on our behalf...I did notice the Comma - though not realising the link together to the foodplant at the time. Maybe one of their marketing advisors is an enthusiast!

Nice ad though.

Re: Ribena
Must be why we get lots of Commas in our area, Royal fruit farm up the road grows Blackcurrants for the juice trade. Eric
Re: Ribena
Maybe they should add the jingle "8 out of 10 Commas preferred it".

Re: Ribena
Did anyone spot that the comma in the film has upperside wings in place of undersides?

Re: Ribena
I did notice the wings but i was just surprised at the subtlety/pure coindcidence of the comma and blackcurrant. I hear clearwings and magpie moths are in the next one. The Pug wanted to much money

From Ribena to Coca Cola

So, which butterflies are in this ad? Monarch? Swallowtail?
I've read this is supposed to be a "feel good" ad, and like the Ribena one it works for me (although I wouldn't buy either product particularly so it fails on that score). I wonder how many people, in these financial straightened times, will turn back to nature?
On and a nice bit of Peter and the Wolf going on in the background too.

Re: Ribena
I think that's not a monarch but the closely related Queen (Danaus gilippus).
I have dreams like that (the butterflies and stuff - not that bloke lying there).

Ah, I didn't think it looked quite right but wondered if it were just a composite butterfly. Thanks, Guy.
Hmmmm, tell me about zees dreamz ...
And something that's been bugging me that the UKButts members may be able to answer, would a full glass bottle of cola float??? Would the weight of the glass be compensated for by the gas in the bottle? I guess it would work along the same principles as a ship with water displacement, so I've answered my own question, sort of!

Re: Ribena
I would expect it to sink, Susie.
Coca Cola is probably denser than pure water, as it contains a lot of dissolved sugar. The glass is certainly denser. While dissolved, the CO2 might also increase the density - not sure about that. Only the undissolved gas at the top of the bottle would provide any buoyancy.
If the total mass of the full bottle of coke exceeds the mass of the same volume of water it will sink. Eureka!

Well my gut instinct was that it would sink, but then I started thinking about it and confused myself! I'm gonna have to buy a bottle of coke now and find out what happens.
Guess the advert did work after all, because they've appealed to the geek in me, but not for the reasons intended!
