the smaller fritillaries are showing well now. I have put some on flickr ( http://www.flickr.com/groups/809803@N24/ ). not sure exactly what the first one is. Upperside and underside shots included. the upperside hindwings are a gorgeous pinky orange colour.

There's several shots of Queen of Spain Fritillaries and either Spotted or Lesser Spotted Fritillary (possibly both Male and Female Spotted Fritillary). But best wait until some folks that know what they're talking about weigh in  . I do love the Queen of Spain Fritillary, and was frustrated not to see any in Andalucia this August :( .

Was having lunch at a restaurant in Carcassonne when we noticed a small butterfly flying around the hanging baskets. It was a Geranium Bronze; my first ever.
No camera unfortunately.

The first one must be a small tortoiseshell but can't fathom either of the other two...
Unless the middle one is a black hairstreak?

Is the middle one one of the purple emperors?

Guy

EDIT: I think it's purple emperor. The clip comes from the hindwing and there's no well demarcated white on the hindwing underside of lesser purple.

Well done to:

Trev: you scored 1 out of 3
Lee: you scored 2 out of 3
Guy: you are today's winner with 3 out of 3 !!

The first was a Small Tortoiseshell on straw taken near Spaldwick, Cambs
The second was the underwing of a Purple Emperor from Fermyn Wood
The last one was the underwing of a Two Tailed Pasha from the South of France.

i will put up some more shortly

Very nice effects! I've just tried out Sumopaint - never heard of it before. I use Google Docs but didn't know there was image software out there online too.

For your piccies, I go for swallowtail, comma and silver-washed fritillary.

Can I have a cookie?
