Caterpillar ID

Post by COLIN BAKER »

Somewhat sticking my toes in the water and having breezed through Jim Porter's "Caterpillars of the British Isles" I would have to say the caterpillar looks very much like a moth called "The Stranger"(Laconobia blenna).
Should this be the case and again referring back to the book it would be the first time the larval stage has been recorded in Britain.
It is a coastal moth that feeds on Sea Beet,Prickly Saltwort and other seashore plants.
The moth has only been recorded three times, the last time back in 1868,so I am suspicious.
Do you live near the south coast?
I also await for other offers as to the ID.

Hi, I'm the photographer of this image, and I've been guided to this forum.

Thanks for your research, Colin. Indeed, I live on the coast, in Essex. Very interesting. I think I'll do more research on this. Thanks again! :)
