Madiera in January.

Post by roundwood123 »

I thought i would post this in case anybody is thinking of going to Madiera.
For various reasons i can not go on my usual Spain/Portugal Spring Butterfly hunt so i went to Madiera last week instead, There were very few Butterflies around but i did see around 10 Monarchs, lots of Speckled Wood, a couple of Red Admirals, a Clouded Yellow and a few unidentified Whites, Moths were better with around 25 species including a Bloxworth Snout.

Did you happen to see Pararge xiphia or Vanessa vulcania?

You were quite lucky with the moths. I've usually seen only a few - and most of them micro-moths. My comments on butterflies are here.
