Congratulations to all the entrants, but for me it was always going to be Julian's Brimstone in gold medal position. This remains one of the best butterfly images I've ever seen. Simply stunning!

Thanks Neil. Phew... I'm somewhat stunned by your comments because the picture was a fluke really in photographic terms as I just pointed and shot and let the camera( Eos 40d + ef100 macro) do the rest. Having both larval foodplants thriving in the garden for over a decade did of course help and just knowing that Mrs Brimstone was obviously keen on that particular bush meant I didn't have to work too hard at getting the picture :) Having said that, I've never won anything before so it is really well appreciated and it will spur me on to try harder next time..

Hi Julian,
I'm sure that even the very best wildlife photographers would include 'luck' amongst the most important technical aspects of their profession! And 'luck' is something you make for yourself. The end result, and the enjoyment derived in its pursuit, are all that really matter.
