Advice on 2nd hand equipment

Post by Pete Eeles »

Possibly one of the strangest posts I've made, and not at all butterfly-related, but since you're such a friendly and helpful bunch ... :)

One of my sons needs a DSLR for a 2-year course he's on (and yes, it needs to be a DSLR and yes, dad is paying!). While I could give him my Canon 30D and upgrade to a Canon 7D, I think a cheaper option is to get a second-hand kit (since I think we'll get more value for money than new - given his needs) that comes complete with a general-purpose lens (since his needs are general-purpose, not macro!). I've looked at London Camera Exchange and they seem to have some great deals on second-hand equipment. Since his dad is a Canonista, Canon is the only sensible choice so that he can borrow my lenses, flash units etc. etc.. I'd just appreciate thoughts on how to best go about getting a good deal. And I think I'd rather go to a high street dealer to get a warranty, rather than eBay (unless it's a dealer!).

Thx in advance for your replies and advice.

Cheers,

- Pete

Pete
Get him Nikon.
Imagine creeping up to your first PE ab of the season only to discover he has "borrowed" your batteries..........................

Roger

p.s. London Camera Exchange, in my experience are pretty open to knocking a few quid of marked prices, and will not wriggle if you bring something back that proves to be faulty.
Cheers

I would say that LCE is the way to go. The 30D lens kits look the best deal to me, at £329.99 in Winchester. But if you were being a selfish git, you could get the 40D with the 17-85 IS lens for £699 from Guildford, and then give him your old 30D with that awful 18-55 lens.

At this point he won't know the difference anyway. :D

Their may be a better deal on eBay, but I would much sooner use a high street dealer.
