Purple Emperor

Post by Paul Murray »

Thanks for adding the forum Pete.

I'm intending to take some vacation in the summer to visit the south coast, and would really like to see a Purple Emperor. Any hints?

Thanks in advance.

Bentley Wood

Hi Paul - and welcome.

I'm sure you've probably done your own research and, if you have, this may sound somewhat boring :D

But one of the best sites to find Purple Emperor is Bentley Wood on the Hampshire / Wiltshire border. I say this for 2 reasons: a) You're fairly certain (no guarantees!) to see an adult and b) There will be lots of fellow enthusiasts to help you find the critters! You need to start in the car park at the West Tytherley entrance.

Coords for the site can be found at http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/sites_ng ... ley%20Wood.

The best time to see Purple Emperor is probably the end of the first week of July.

Take a look at http://www.butterfly-conservation.org/s ... index.html since the photo at the top is at Bentley Wood!

Hope this helps and ... good luck. I'm sure others will have others suggestions too.

Cheers,

- Pete
