2 caterpillars for ID

Post by Jonathan Evans »

I saw the first caterpillar at Broadcroft Quarry, Portland, Dorset, on 05/08/2010.

and the following caterpillar in a meadow in north Cardiff on 22/07/2010.

Stumped with both, so any clues are most welcome :?

I think these are both moth larvae. The second looks like one of the pugs. The first I'm not sure about either - Reddish Buff is a match but highly unlikely!

Any moffers on here?

Cheers,

I would agree with the first reply; One of the brown butterflies for the first and a geometrid (looper) moth for hte second. Sorry I cannot be more specific

Thanks for the replies. Having looked at images of pug caterpillars, I've noticed that the second caterpillar resembles (but is not identical to) Mottled Pug. So it could very well be a similar species.

Would Satyr Pug be a possibility? It compares with the picture in Porter, and habitat and time of year would be right.

I've checked a few images of Satyr Pug caterpillars, and although they seem variable, the example image on the Hants Moths site is virtually identical to my own image. So it would seem to be Satyr Pug. Thanks Matsukaze :D
