Short HD video

Post by robevans »

Hi,
Edited a short montage together of a walk last week -should probably be titled "Streak and Frits" :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCSX45oXpWA[/video]

(for 1080p version follow to youtube and watch there)
Shot on Canon 550D with a mixture of Canon macro 100m F2.8 and Sigma 100-300 F4
I'm amazed at the quality of this camera - the look of the video is comparable with kit costing five times as much!!!

Cheers,

Rob

Ooh - nice video, Rob! I think you've doubled the number of contributors that regularly post videos in the forums - but I fully anticipate more videos being published over time, given the technology available in today's DSLRs. And nice to meet you while watching White-letter Hairstreaks last week!

I'm sure Rob won't mention it - so I will! Rob is an amateur film-maker and one of his excellent pieces can be found here (where you can judge for yourself!). Hope you don't mind me posting this, Rob!

Ooh Rob, that was quite professional looking. I wish I had held out and got the 550D, I settled for 500D and the video settings are better on 550D, but there is a hack in progress to port the settings to 500D. What are the video settings like on 550D can you set the apature to whatever you want (the range the lens allows) and then the background or foreground is in focus as far as you set the apature? Or is the focus based on what you focused on with the lens?

In 500D you can't change the apature on video (there is a dirty hack) where you go to AV mode, set your apature, click to take off the lens, rotate it until apature reads f00 then go to movie mode and press the apature focus button (I think thats what it is called) then press the button you press when you get the message about lens not attached properly, the apature should be what you choose on AV before getting the F00, but I use a Sigma 105mm Macro and as far as I can focus is only what I focused with the lens, not as far as I set the apature.

I am an amatur wildlife film maker like yourself, but I know what I want to have a video like, but never get it how I want it.

Hi Dave,
There are two base settings on the 550 video mode, auto and manual exposure.
Auto does as it says and controls aperture,ISO and shutter speed, whereas the manual mode does allow full control over shutter speed, aperture (like you say, within the lenses capacity) and ISO too, which even set to high adds reasonably low levels of noise - i think this is low light level potential is an area where these cameras do very well indeed.
As it was a quick shoot i actually let it run in auto for this film, you can see in particulary how the shutter speed gets stepped up as on the pull focus shot between the wasp and the frit. You wouldnt see that on manual.
All focusing is done manually, it's a little tricky to get the hang of particularly if you're pulling focus in shot, you need to have a good idea of start point, end point and also make the movement ultra smooth as not to knock the camera too much. Practise makes perfect!
From the sounds of it the 550 would probably overcome the issues you're having with the 500.
I know for a fact that 550D's and 7D's are being using in broadcast programmes now, including some wildlife docs!
and then the background or foreground is in focus as far as you set the apature?
It's all to do with depth of field (DOF). With a very small apature you will find that nearly everything will be in focus - deep DOF.As you open up the apeture the the amount in focus gradually reduces - shallow DOF. You can then use your focus ring to select that distance away from the camera that is in clear focus. It's exactly the same principle with stills.

Good luck with the films, post some up!!

Thanks for all that Rob. Interesting that the 550D and 7D are being used for wildlife film making. Here are some videos I shot with my 500D (I sometimes use my Tamron 18-200mm IF Macro as its bad for photography, but seems better for insect filming (to a point as it can't focus on something small)) Here are three videos I have made in past (I am going to do more in future) all 1080p HD (BTW, the web site name on the videos doesn't work anymore, I moved it, see my signature)

I think one of the problems I had, compared to you Rob, despite 550D having more settings is that I used a fixed zoom lens (Sigma 105mm Macro) and I suppose this is why I don't get good DOF but I need a good shorter macro lens to shoot video with compared to my Tamron 18-200mm which I don't really like.
