SWF_WA sites near Swindon: Request for info

Post by midpro »

All

I am staying near Swindon next week. I remember reading that there are some local sites for Silver-washed Fritillary, White Admiral and various hairstreaks nearby and would appreciate grid refs and on-site directions to recommended locations from anyone who is familiar with this part of the world. I am also keen to improve my skills and would appreciate any tips on best time of day, behaviour etc. to get the most out of my visit

Many thanks in advance

Lower Woods near Wickwar isn't too far away.

I went there a couple of weeks ago and the place was teeming with SWFs. There were a handful of White Admirals too and you should have no problem seeing both.

Details of the site are within my post on the 'sightings' thread.

There is a colony of Brown Hairstreaks based on Braydon Forest just to the west of Swindon, though I'm not sure about the best place to find them. Details on BC Wilts branch website.

I've occasionally wondered if NE Wiltshire might support the Black Hairstreak, which until quite recently had a colony only a few miles away from Swindon.
