There has been a report of a Camberwell Beauty at Titchwell Marsh RSPB reseve in Norfolk today at 10.29am by information hut in the car park

Ah, that could mean a change in plan for Tuesday. I had intended to go to Sharpenhoe Clappers in the afternoon for DG Frits. Maybe instead Titchwell for CB followed by Holkham later for WL Hairstreak. Awaiting more reports before I go twitching all that distance.

I’m not a great one for twitching at a distance of 80 miles for the off-chance so will only go for it if I am more or less CERTAIN of seeing it and then able to combine it with a visit to Holkham. As there is so much uncertainty, I’ll probably stay local instead on Tuesday.

Having said that, although I have seen Camberwell Beauty in Scandinavia and in Canada, I would love to see in Britain.

Hi Everyone,

Sandra and I went to Titchwell today in search of our first Camberwell Beauty. Thanks Steve A for posting this yesterday. We struck lucky at 2.45pm in the picnic area where it was on an Oak Tree feeding on the Honeydew. It was an amazing experience as it frequently glided around the Oak and us during the next 2 1/2 hours.

It attracted quite a crowd at times but unfortunately it didn't come close enough for a Macro shot, however sandra did manage to get some record shots with her Canon 7D and 100-400 lense.

A brilliant day was had by everyone who saw it.

I’ve been looking at the weather charts.

On 18th, 19th & 20th June there were brisk winds straight from Norway.

The winds subsequently became light.

Incidentally, four Cranes flew over the picnic area while we were watching the CB today. I got a (very poor quality) record shot of the birds but it was adequate for the i/d to be confirmed by the staff who were slightly excited.

Incidentally, four Cranes flew over the picnic area while we were watching the CB today. I got a (very poor quality) record shot of the birds but it was adequate for the i/d to be confirmed by the staff who were slightly excited.

Despite what the RSPB staff suggested, I reckon those are Spoonbills rather than Cranes, aren't they? That's based on the apparently large and long bill, and the white primaries - Crane flight feathers would be dark. The apparently dark forewing looks to be a photographic artefact caused by strong light, bit like this one: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uT_Kqp56XoQ/S ... web+59.jpg. There's been a number of Spoonbills moving around N Norfolk in the last few days, as well.

I really don’t know but I’m sure you are right. Despite the fact that they were very high and couldn’t be seen at all clearly, the striking characteristic was the translucent appearance of the aft part of the wings this being in contrast to the somewaht darker front part.

I presume both Cranes and Spoonbills use thermals to soar?

In another thread someone had said how huge they were. I was reading Adrian Riley's book again last night and he lists the avarage wingspan for a CB as 82mm while His majesty is only a paltry 79mm (and I thought they were pretty big!), was it that large?
