April 2010 Sightings

1 speckled wood and 1(female) orange tip flying around a small field of ladies smock(I saw the SW when walking to school on a blue bell it looked rather cold and I saw the orange tip on the coach that we went on for a school trip).

When I was a few years younger than you are now (way back in the Stone Age)! I caught a female Orange Tip. The only poor quality picture I had at the time was of a male Orange Tip. I thought that my female (clearly an Orange Tip) without the orange must have been what my mum called a “freak”. That catch really got me going and my interest has never stopped.

At about the same time, I caught a sparkling Common Blue and proudly took it to school to show my head teacher. To my great upset (and confusion) he dismissed it as a “moth”. Another moment of realisation - adults aren’t always right!

Well, at the end of April I'm on a grand total of 15 species of (adult) butterflies for the year, plus Purple Hairstreak larva and Brown Hairstreak egg. And that's three more than Sami - my girlfriend - so I'm a happy bunny!!! 'Course she'll doubtless catch up soon enough...

Guess it's all eyes to May 2010 Sightings next...we're hoping to be approaching 25 species for the year by the end of May...

Reports on the Sussex BBCS website point to there having been an influx of Red Admirals in the past couple of days .
