It's an interesting place at any time of year and certainly even worth a walk round in January. If nothing else there is quite a good garden centre which sells some more illusive plants. I was able to get the abelia chinensis (sp?) there last year which i had been after for a while.
Congrats on yr RA.

something i forgot to add is that if you go on a sunny day, as i did last year, you are more likely to see the butterflies, particularly in flight. Someone told me they had visited a few days prior to my trip and hardly seen a thing because it was a cloudy day and the butterflies kept themselves tucked away.
Re: Butterflies in the Glasshouse
There was a problem with the amount of butterflies in the glasshouse when I visited the other day which they were trying to rectify. It was nice to see a few butterflies, and to feel so warm for a while too, but I am not sure it was worth the entrance fee.
Unlike last January there wasn't much in bloom in the grounds either. Plants are definitely behind this year.

Hi Susie,
I'm thinking of going at the weekend. Were you able to take photos in there?
Thanks,
Lee

To butterfly meadows, chalk downlands and leafy glades; to summers eternal.

Hi Lee
I went last year and thoroughly enjoyed it. Coming in from the cold most camera lenses steamed over for about 15 mins but after that it was fine. Enjoy.

Once you get through the scrum of other photographers you can take photos.

Thanks Susie!
I really need some cheering up and I thought a few tropical butterflies might help!
Sunday is the last day too.
Cheers

Hi,
Unfortunately I was unable to go. I had made a day free in the half term, but things cropped up - like they do. Always next year, I'm sure.

Re: Butterflies in the Glasshouse
I did manage to go today. It was a horrid day outside, rainy and no sun. I only saw one butterfly in flight!
There lots of Owls, Blue Morphos and 2 types of Swallowtails but none flying. They advertised around 10 other species but I think I was just too late.
I'd recommend going at least a week before their advertised closing day (today) as things did seem to be winding down.
One highlight was an exceptionally friendly robin on the way back to the car:
Cheers
