U is for ...?

Post by aetiefen »

This is an odd identification...and it has me totally stumped. I have a set of alphabet wall cards for my son (eeboo's All Around the Land) which has a gorgeous butterfly (could be a moth too I suppose--artist liberty) on the "U" page. The butterfly is a bit of a yellowy-taupe cast, with black/purple/black bands on the hindwing. Any ideas?

I wonder if it could be one of the Urania moths, large colourful moths with tails.

Union Jack butterfly (Delias mysis)? It has the yellow part, but not sure about the other things. Could be a uraniia

Its is an Australian butterfly that lives in tropical rainforests of northern Queensland.

I just had a look on the internet and I think you might find the butterfly is holding an umbrella...

I like "Unidentified" :) The Union Jack looks fairly close, so I might just call it that.

The cards are quite imaginative...there are several items in each one that represent the letter, so the umbrella is one, the flowers are another (although I can't identify those either!!!) and of course the butterfly/moth.

Thanks for all the ideas!!

Sorry Allison - I was over-hasty. I really thought you hadn't seen the umbrella!
