New Newsletter Format
Hi all,
For those of you that are subscribed to the UKB website. I've implemented a new mechanism that makes it much easier to create newsletters and I intend to use this next year to provide a weekly update. The first newsletter using the new mechanism is currently queued for processing, but you should receive your copy in the next hour or so. Unfortunately, a bug caused simple text to be sent in the first batch - which I've queued to resend as HTML (which allows, for example, images to be included).
As ever, I'd appreciate feedback from those that are signed up. There are quite a few bounced email addresses, but I suspect this is because, for the first time, I'm actually getting to see which emails are valid (or not!). Either that or a huge bug in the new mechanism!
Cheers,
- Pete

Re: New Newsletter Format
Hi Pete,
I got one copy of the news letter, (the one with photo's) and I think that it's great.
Well done on another fabulous enhancement of the site.
Wishing you a very Happy Christmas too. I hope that Santa brings you what you want.

Can't remember if I signed up for newsletter or not, I didn't get anything anyway, so if I didn't, I'd like it.

Hmmm - that's a bit worrying. Anyone else not get theirs?Dave McCormick wrote:Can't remember if I signed up for newsletter or not, I didn't get anything anyway, so if I didn't, I'd like it.
You are on the list Dave, and your email didn't bounce. So you should have received it. 2 things:
1. You could try unsubscribing and then subscribing again. The "Newsletter->Subscribe" menu item allows you to do both.
2. The current and past newsletters can now all be found (well, there's only one at the mo!) under the Newsletter menu.
Cheers,
- Pete

If you select the "Newsletter" menu from the home page, there is a "Subscribe" submenu (this is a minor change from what was there about 30 minutes ago!).

Re: New Newsletter Format
This is what I got.
This message has been sent to notify you that the UK Butterflies website has been updated.
Improved Newsletter Format!
Hopefully you'll be reading this newsletter in its new form! A new mechanism has been implemented that will allow the UK Butterflies team to post weekly updates of butterfly-related activity during the more-active months. A lot of this information, especially sightings and unusual observations, is often "buried" in the UK Butterflies forums or various sightings pages from Butterfly Conservation branch websites - so we look forward to keeping you up to date as the year unfolds.
Contribution to Butterfly Conservation
As hinted at in the last newsletter, we were hoping that UK Butterflies would be in a position to donate over £1000 to Butterfly Conservation this year. I'm pleased to report that our grand total has come to £1709.46. I'd like to express my appreciation to UK Butterflies sponsor WildGuides as well as BirdGuides, who allowed us to sell some of their books and DVDs with a significant percentage of the sales going towards this total. In particular, however, I'd like to thank Gary Richardson and Lisa Baker-Richardson, once again, for their huge contribution in selling the UK Butterflies calendar and a wonderful array of greetings cards and prints. Their contribution alone came to a shade under £1500.
Google Maps Integration
You can tell it's winter when the website starts to get some desperately-needed updates! Something I've been meaning to improve for some time is to show the site information using Google Maps.
The new mechanism is vastly superior to the old mechanism where maps were almost impossible to view if the particular grid square contained a lot of sites. The new mechanism allows you to dynamically move around the map, zoom in and out, and combine roads with satellite information, for example. Various "push pins" also allow you to see the species (and species rating, if available) for each site. In conjunction with this enhancement, the website now allows you to contribute your own sites using this form. Just remember that the UK Butterflies policy is to never include sensitive or private sites!
A 21st Century Sitemap!
You'll also find a nifty little gadget on the UK Butterflies home page that allows you to easily access the main features of the website. This gadget is modelled after the Apple iTunes album selector and should be familiar to anyone using iTunes, or that has an iPhone or iPod Touch.
Reminder! 2010 Photography Workshop
2010 sees the return of the UK Butterflies photography workshop, in association with the Hampshire and Isle of Wight branch of Butterfly Conservation. The purpose of the workshop is to gather together members of the UK Butterflies community to share their photographic experiences, with an emphasis on Lepidoptera. The event will be run at Longstock, near Stockbridge, Hampshire, on Saturday April 24th 2010, 10am to 5pm. Click here for more details on the event, including information on how to register. We're delighted that Matthew Oates has agreed to be our guest speaker.
Happy Christmas
Finally, this is probably the last newsletter of 2009 and so I'd like to wish everyone a Happy Christmas and a butterfly-filled 2010. I'd especially like to thank my fellow UK Butterflies team members, as well as the many forum members and other contributors that have helped make this website what it has become today.
And apologies if you've received this email twice - "gremlins in the machine"!
Happy butterflying!
- Pete Eeles
Sorry, but I can't copy thr photo's.

It's actually at the bottom of the Subscribe form. Not obvious, I'd agree! So there's now an explicit "Unsubscribe" menu option too!

Re: New Newsletter Format
Hi Dave - I think we've "crossed" in the ether.
I saw you'd unsubscribed - but this still leaves your information in the system. This needs to be removed before you can successfully resubscribe. Looks like you've unsubscribed and then resubscribed immediately. Anyway ...
What you need to do is subscribe again since the system is now "clean" as it were. You should receive another email that you should use to confirm.
Cheers,
- Pete
