It's a speckled wood, but it's the Southern one, they say the Rhone (I think) is the river that divides the orangy one from the creamy one (that we get). But Peter will know the details!!!!

I saw an Orangy one in Hampshire a couple of years ago.

Definitely a Speckled Wood, although a different subspecies from those found in the UK.

The critter you saw is Pararge aegeria aegeria.

Most of those in the UK are Pararge aegeria tircis.

My experience is that, the further north you move, the whiter the spots get!

Cheers,

Many Thanks, most interesting.

Also saw lots of yellow butterflies with a black body but did not get a pic, they were very common any Ideas

If the wings had dark borders then they could have been one of the clouded yellow variants, pale or berger's, otherwise brimstone or perhaps cleopatra's brimstone.

Suprising how close the colours are to a "Wall". When I first looked at the pic I thought it was a funny shaped Wall :-)
