406 Not acceptable

Post by Dave McCormick »

I tried accessing the Reals Wood White page: http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/species. ... ame=Réal's Wood White and got (Using IE8):

"Internet Explorer cannot read this webpage format"

All the other species pages I went onto (didn't go on them all) worked for me.
Cheers all,

Thanks Dave - I can reproduce this (it's my fault no doubt) and will look into it later. Thx!

Should be fixed now - please let me know of any problems you come across (the change I've had to make is quite far-reaching!).

You won't believe what a problem this has been! Moving the website to a new provider has unearthed a whole host of new problems - mostly all fixed now.

One of those is the handling of URL-unfriendly characters found in Réal's Wood White and Oberthür's Grizzled Skipper. After significant research, I've come to the conclusion that unusual characters should *not* be included in URLs (which is exactly what I was doing to pass a butterfly ID between linked pages). To overcome this, the links will now show the scientific species name (e.g. reali) rather than the vernacular name (e.g. Réal's Wood White).

For backward compatibility, the old links will be preserved (but not preferred!).

Anyway - because of the extent of changes I've had to make (i.e. they are significant and have had a ripple effect through most of the code and, to some extent, the database behind the website) there are likely to be a few wrinkles that still need to be ironed out. And so, if you see any glitches, please let me know.

Thanks for being patient while the website gets back to a stable state!

Cheers,

- Pete

Pete
I for one think you are doing a great job, and I shall buy you a pint next time I see you.
This is the best Butterfly website on the internet (probably one of the best web sites full stop actually..) and we all owe you a debt of thanks for your efforts.
It is well appreciated.
Cheers
